See, the question is whether the two (whatevers, I suck at naming the grammar stuff although I'm good at it functionally) are directly connected. "You have to clean a hamster's cage often because they poop so much" is wrong; a writer making this mistake probably is mentally thinking "because hamsters poop so much", but forgot that they originally started the sentence referring to one hamster (even though it represents all hamsters).
But in Rol's case, it's a separate sentence, so couldn't he say "one" and by implication be referring to "one thread"? In that case, he has not specified what I rarely make one of (which is arguably incorrect, but not the same mistake you claim he made), but we draw the obvious conclusion that he refers to a thread.
