How does the Wii U sacrifice the entire Wii audience?  The Wii U looks like what Nintendo said, they want to make it deeper and wider.  The Wii U controller looks like a way to do it.  A touch screen is very accessible, but also manages to do things to capture the core.  PLUS, they made themselves the only option, at this time, to get a high def home console in homes which don't have high def TVs.

A touchscreen works on a handheld device. When it comes to home consoles, a touchscreen gets obliterated by the Wiimote. So which benefits does the Wii U have over the Wii?

  • More processing power: Probably irrelevant for most people.
  • Ports of 360 and PS3 games: Those certainly weren't a reason why people bought a Wii, because those games weren't there. It's not like nobody would want to play these games, but people won't buy a new console for them. And if they do, then chances are that they already own a 360 or PS3 which will continue to get the same third party games as the Wii U.
  • A touchscreen controller: A downgrade, not an upgrade.
So at the end of the day it comes down to a handful of new games being possible with the touchscreen controller, but that could have probably been achieved with the controller being a Wii peripheral. Sure, it would have meant only four players instead of five, but other than that? Nintendo is basically trying to force people to buy a new expensive brick in order to play games that they could have made for the original Wii.

Being backwards compatible with the Wii, but adding PS3 and 360 content doesn't lose anyone or anything, it adds things.  The touchscreen controller adds not only the ability to play without the TV, but also is another feature being added to Nintendo's set up.  The issue Nintendo faces is now is that they had to do a graphic update.  They still keep the older controls but do something different.  Do you think merely dragging over the Wii controllers to high def without the controller would be sufficient?

The thing is that, what the new controller offers is NOT what you can do with the Wii at all.  That is a point of it.  For example, the Wii U is the system of choice if you want to do boardgame stuff.  The touch screen IS accessible and opens up a lot more that wasn't available before.  Do note they are keeping the old Wii controls around.

Watch this and tell me what they lost...
