The Wii was Nintendo's return to the core and the Wii U, just like the 3DS, is a system that shows the middle finger to the core. You don't see your fanbase decreasing by catering to it, so your perspective has it entirely backwards.

Your argument is 100% false.

Just because the WiiU is upgrading its power does not mean they are ignoring the core... Its about having the best hardware base to continue to push the medium forward and provide experiences that were not possible before.

Had Wii been $100 more at launch with power closer to 360 it would have been not only just as successful, but FAR more due to not being robbed of proper 3rd party support. People would still have clamoured for Wii Sports in the same look and feel, but they would have stopped a lot of 2nd console purchase as well as caught all those who really wanted the 3rd party AAA.

I know I would never have purchased a PS3... maybe we should make a new thread to discuss this as its OT.

I didn't say that a power upgrade leads to abandonment of the core, because that would be outright stupid as every system had more processing power than the previous one.

What you are doing is making the argument that Nintendo needs all the third party support, but the Wii was successful regardless. And had Nintendo continued to support the Wii in a way it initially looked like, i.e. more motion control games and titles that are similar to NES games in playstyle, then their hardware sales wouldn't have dropped like a rock as people would have kept spreading the word on how awesome this console is. People don't look at another console, if the one they already have has more than enough games to play. You don't need third parties for that, just a first party that keeps being focused on the things that matter.

Wii was rampantly successful, you're right. However, it also failed at the same time.

I should not be forced to buy another console to play all the games I want. 3rd party AAA should be available on everyone's setup, simply because they want as much as possible as a return and if all consoles had enough of a simularity in base capabilities, that woudl have happened.

The only reason HD Twins userbase was equal and then grew larger to that of Wii wasn't because Wii stopped making simple games, but because they never gained the additional great 3rd party games.

People will by Nintendo for Nintendo and its uniqueness... they will come in massive waves for the right mass market game... aka Wii Sports, Wii Fit, NSMBWii, MKWii, etc.... however, Nintendo should strive to make sure they don't seek entertainmnet from its direct rivals as well. That means gaining those AAA 3rd party games. Again, I would never have bought a PS3 had Assassin's Creed, Batman, equal CoD, BFBC2, and others had been offered on Wii. I could have dealt with lower graphical output, so long as the game was essentially the same. However, 3rd parties didn't event attempt that as the cost it would take to make an engine to properly downscale the game wasn't worth it. Instead you got CoD like downgrades with big missing features on top of lower graphics.

WiiU hopefully will rectify that. It will be lower spec'd than the other two next gen hardware, but hopefully more like PS2 was. This way it can be a rampant success to the nth degree... not just a leader.
