Well who knows... if you take a look back to 2005 for example, we had games like Resident Evil 4 and Gran Turismo 4 pushing the current systems to the max in terms of visuals, and then in the fall of that year the 360 was released with a pretty underwhelming launch library of basically current-gen games with HD skins like Madden, Need for Speed and King Kong, and even system exclusives like PD Zero were a bit underwhelming in the visuals department.

But who would have thought back then that 6 years later that very same console would be capable of the level of graphics seen in upcoming games like Battlefield 3 and Rage. So while the next generation of consoles might not seem as such a huge leap at first with games only slightly better looking than their current gen counterparts, a few years down the road developers might be able to do some impressive stuff that rivals some of the best CGI in movies out there.
