They never were true to the books to begin with, but that's a common occurence in movies based on pre-existing book stories. Plus, in the latests HP movies it wouldn't make any sense to put events that were connected to previous events in HP movies, such as Hermione struggling for house elves in Goblet of Fire or cutting Peeves out of the character roster from the start all together.

I don't blame them though. If they did the movies exactly like the books, even Philosopher's Stone would be, at least, over 4 hours long.
