All I'm saying is that you can't call those who are tired of seeing new Mario games again and again hypocrites, because they don't think the same way you do. If COD fans were claiming that they hate how Sony milks Unchated you would have every right to blame them and call them hypocrites, because there are many COD games. So your comparison is invalid. Btw, I don't like shooters at all, but that doesn't change the facts that they are not hypocrites, as they hate Nintendo not for the main Mario games, but for all the Mario games and the lack of effort to make another great (new) ip like Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc. Different type of games or not, I would absolutely hate it if Kratos, who is my favourite Sony character, was part of every big Sony release. |
Kratos was also included in Little Big Planet, ModNation Racers and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, which makes 5 cameo appearances so far...
But Kratos is not the best example to compare to Mario anyway, as its games are story-driven ones and it lacks the kind of appeal and versatility that Mario has. It's not a character capable of being a "mascot", just like Link isn't either.
On the other hand, Crash does fit the criteria and when Sony published its games we got Crash Team Racing. Also, Ape Escape is another franchise that could be used for these kind of spin-offs, which is exactly what Sony did with Ape Escape Racing, Ape Escape: Pumped and Primed, EyeToy: Monkey Mania and the Academy games, among other cameos. And there's also Jak and Daxter, which got a racing game called Jak X Combat Racing.
There's also plenty of 3rd party examples of course, like Mega Man (Soccer, Battle and Chase, Wily and Right no RockBoard), Pac-Man (Party, World Rally, Pinball Advance), Bomberman (Kart, Fantasy Race, Panic Bomber) or the many Sonic ones. Even characters from Square-Enix or SNK have their own examples (Itadaki Street, Chocobo Racing, Quiz King of Fighters, Days of Memories).
Do you see the hypocrisy now ?
Sure, you could still argue that Mario has appeared on much more games, but that could be easily explained by the fact that Mario is much more popular and was created many years before them. Still, many other publishers have already shown that they have no problem with using their characters on spin-offs or cameos like Nintendo does, so there's part of the hypocrisy. And you could also argue that Nintendo has done a great job with their spin-offs, with some becoming as popular and acclaimed as the main games, unlike most of the examples I mentioned above.
