I hope the finished version does a better job delivering tension and atmosphere, like the first one did. The slow, close-up shots of Luigi opening doors, and the silent parts of the mansion where all you could hear was Luigi whistling the theme, or the floor creaking, or the occasional thunder, went a long way towards enhancing the simple gameplay in order to deliver a memorable experience. Without them the game feels incomplete, to me.

edit: after viewing it again, I also think Luigi's speed and jumpy animations are detrimental to setting up a proper level of tension.
