Mario itself is rather tired i think... Time for a new IP Nintendo... Its about time :P

They could always make more new IPs but why on earth would they drop Mario completely?  Sure he's been around forever but he's been great forever.  SMG is currently the 2nd highest rated game of all time on GR and considering how certain review sites have gotten really stingy to build up a 'hardcore' image for hits that is quite an accomplishment indeed.  It's been recieving GOTY awards from several notable sites in this generation where the Wii gets ragged on for having substandard graphics simply because it excels in a what a game should excel at.  GAMEPLAY!  Dropping Mario would only help to enrage customers who are expecting the next great Mario platformer.

Judging by your name and avatar you are a FF fan.  I could ask why Square doesn't completely drop FF.  That franchise is quite tired as well.  You know why Square doesn't though?  They will completely change characters, create new stories every game and whatnot but the name will still be Final Fantasy for one reason.  Brand recognition.  RPG fans grew up with FF and will always flock to the next FF.  Plenty of video gamers grew up playing Mario throughout the years and they understand that each Mario platformer has a certain guarantee of quality to it so they will flock to it for another platforming adventure.

That said that same quality doesn't neccessarily extend to the Mario Party franchise which is slipping every iteration.  Yet MP8 still sold millions due to brand name so of course Nintendo being a business will take advantage of that and put out MP9 this year.  And that's an extremely smart business decision.  If they know calling it something else like "Steve's Party" instead of Mario Party or just dropping it altogether will lose them tremendous sales why on earth would they do such a thing?
