TWRoO, it's true ioi doesn't have much old data(that he can use anyways), but there are other ways of getting old data. I know Nintendo and Capcom release the lifetime sales data for their franchises here and there, so obviously some companies have data for their old games. As vgchartz grows, I'm sure some companies might supply ioi with historical data. If you really started digging, you could probably find old press releases and interviews that might give some sales data for specific games.
All I'm saying is: don't think that old data is a lost cause. :)
