Thanks to Galaxy, I'm about to give up on Mario.

 Yes. Have him, perhaps, be all, "I'm SICK of you getting all the attention, Mario!"

then it turns out he's been under mind-control or something (so as to not tarnish Luigi's reputation with Daisy and the lot)

 then, Mario breaks the mind-control (with Luigi as an epic pseudo-finalboss), and from that point in the game on, you can play as Luigi OR Mario, and many stars will require you to switch between the two (as Luigi can jump higher and stuff).

 

That would be amazing, and it would bring Luigi back into the limelight.
