For me Insomniac certainly has shown the most impressive 3rd party performance as a company for next-gen systems so far.

Insomniac is 2nd party.

With regard to Killzone 1, I read the game mainly suffered from technical limitations and issues, many reviewers stated this game aimed too high for the PS2. This and other criticism judging from the demonstration videos have been dealt with and the basic concept greatly imporved upon, Killzone 2 has become a much MUCH larger project than the first title was.

I guess thats true if you look at Killzone as an average game that was dragged down to horrid by technical issues.

Anyway, you should probably wait until we have some real screens to compare; scans are almost always deceiving. Personally, I really don't like the change in design for the Chimera. They went from something a bit different, especially with the exposed skin and piping, to a pretty straightforward ho-hum design.

The biggest problem with RFOM graphically was how bad the texture filtering was. Close up most of the textures looked fantastic, but get a few feet away and all detail is lost as things turn into a blurry, almost PS2 like mess. That game would've looked miles better with some decent filtering to preserve the details over distance. Oh, and they went a little wacky with some of the shaders - such as wood and concrete that reflected light like metal.
