Started Link's Awakening. Died 6 times on day one, partially from the fact that the Tail Cave dungeon refused to yield me hearts if i fell out of the boss arena, so even if i was down low, i was stuck

Surprisingly fun for all that, especially since it's my first old-style 2D Zelda ever

Link's Awakening is unforgiving, yes, though death rarely becomes a problem in later dungeons, in my experience. The dungeon design, however, can be... uh, prone to forced backtracking (moreso if you mess up).

By the way, you are aware that you get the 'best' ending if you beat the game without losing a life, correct?

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS: AVERT YOUR EYES (damn the lack of color highlighting and/or spoilertag)

The one where you see that Marin became a sea-gull, or the one where you get to fight Ganon?

SPOILERS AGAIN:

It must be the first, as I'm sure as hell Ganon doesn't appear in Link's Awakening, bar the Ganon form of the final boss.
