Actually the "online" or "offline" status just tells whether you are logged in or not. You could be "offline", but lurking. 
I can imagine poor Kow lurking for hours, watching the terrible XB360 YoY numbers and telling himself "Resist, Kow, you must pretend you weren't there"!
