Well, at least expectations are being set. To be honest, I don't think that Nintendo could surpass Xbox Live simply due to the nature of the two companies. Microsoft is a much larger company with a ton of networking and online infrastructure and experience that can be translated over to their gaming sector. Nintendo on the other hand has neither the experience nor the infrastructure to match Xbox Live.
Remember, the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection on both the Nintendo DS and Wii were primarily programmed and developed by Gamespy. I have no idea as to what their plans are for the future, but I would guess that they're planning on continuing their practice of outsourcing online programming.
