It's pretty much entirely linear so far. There are gems that are hidden off to the side, and some you could miss if you take the wrong path or don't backtrack, but that's about it. But too linear? I don't really think so. It works for me, at least. The world is so crazy and awesome, I don't feel like I'm just shuffling down a series of corridors (*cough*Final Fantasy XIII*cough*).
