It worked for Sony, they have beaten Nintendo 2 of the last three generations.
On a serious note, Nintendo took a real chance with both the DS and the Wii, it was truly amazing how the market embraced these technology, but it does not take away from both MS with its online features and Sony's $600 blu-ray mess. In the end, Nintendo won, but Sony and MS had the consoles with the lasting appeal.
In terms of innovation, Nintendo is way behind to me, they are missing so many essential features a 2011 console should have.
To me, MS has done more for its future minus blu-ray than any other console this Gen. By making it more about the software, Ms has really impressed me, and if they can learn to make a decent hardware, they can win a generation.
