Reviews probably stopped a lot of semi-interested people from buying it, same with the online hate.
I thought FFX was pretty horrible and never played XII, was originally planning on skipping XIII until I borrowed a copy from some friends who basically said that most reviews read like they'd only played the game for 10 hrs. max.
For me, it's the best FF since VIII.
