I don't think it was a smart move on Nintendo's part. In a way it was but they did it wrong.
I think the name WiiU will have a huge effect on sales. Casuals will not want to invest in a new Wii. Look at 3DS right now, I hear it again and again everytime I talk to casual's "Why do I want a 3D DS?" the casual consumers just don't grasp that its an entirely new device with brand new games. The casuals see the 3DS as a 3D DS, not a new platform. I think when WiiU launches Nintendo will have a hard time convincing Wii casual owners that they need to buy a WiiU. Convincing them that WiiU is not just a Wii upgrade will be very hard. You see Nintendo didn't think that this casual market would remain casual, Nintendo had hoped these casual gamers would become hardcore and want to upgrade next generation.
So name wise I think Nintendo has lost the casual market. Nintendo will need several big casual releases to appeal to the casual market. Honestly Nintendo saying they are going to target the hardcore leads me to believe Nintendo may loose a huge amount of their casual audience. Not only due to the name but the fact that casual software needs to flow like water, if Nintendo is concentrating on hardcore games then this casual market won't be supported as much. Though Nintendo did show some WiiSports like demo's so here's hoping they can sell casual software and bring in the market.
On the flip side, I think Nintendo is being very smart to launch first, and with at least 50% the power of the PS3 Nintendo is off to a very good start. The controller I was excited for until I heard you could only use one at a time. I think the technology is definatly a step forward and in true Nintendo fashion the games are going to be amazing.
As for Sony sticking out ten years, if Sony starts to loose money or profits begin to dip again they will jump ship. PS4 has been in development for years and Sony will likely launch when they start loosing money or Nintendo starts making too much. If WiiU sells poorly like 3DS then Sony will be in no rush to launch PS4 but if WiiU takes off then Sony and Microsoft will both want to launch to stop them from getting to much of a lead.
If Sony and MS both waited another 5 years to launch PS4/Nex-Box then Nintendo will make a killing and yes it would be very good for Nintendo!
