GAF estimated they can manufacture the controller for around $50 or so.

People see a screen on the controller and think just because of that it will be really expensive.

The iPad uses a bigger and better screen and it costs apple around $70 to make.

kinect cost around the same price to produce yet look at what price it's sold for

Kinect is an add-on that MS said was like 'relaunching' the 360. It's not the main controller for a system.

The iPad 2 costs considerably more than $70. The original entry level iPad (WiFi, 16 GB) was an estimated $259.60 including manufacturing costs.

But any comparisons between an iPad and a Wii U controller really need to be thrown out the window immediately as one is a standalone device (the equivalent of a Wii U that had no "base console" as the actual core of the platform) whereas the Wii U controllers, if all of past Nintendo history is taken into account, will use matured components all around in the interest of cutting costs and will likely use the absolute cheapest LCD panel (which is allegedly as low as 480p res) they can source while still maintaining Nintendo's high standards of quality.

The BOM on Kinect is only $56.
