Perhaps try to think of it like this:
Ignore the tablet for a minute and Wii U is basically an upgrade to the Wii in a more similar way to how PS1 > PS2 > PS3 and XB > X360... in that the controllers are much the same (the tablet controller is basically a classic controller ignoring the touchscreen, so you can use that or an old Wii classic, or a standard Wii controller [well, with motion+]
Then on top of that there is the tablet, which gives some neat possibilities for single player games in particular, as well as online multiplayer, and likely a few unique ideas for local multiplayer.
