As I have said before, and I recently saw John Carmack say in an interview, the Wii was ignored by many publishers because they focused on treating the PS3, XBox 360 and PC as a single platform; and if they could have included the Wii into their development plans it probably would have seen most of the same multi-platform games as the HD consoles.
I suspect that part of the intention with the Crytech, Unreal and Tech-5 engine is to help developers create games that will be released on a very diverse set of platforms; probably including everything from tablet-PCs or current generation consoles and going up to PCs with processing power that is greater than any next generation console. The reason for this is simple, if costs increase on next generation game development in a similar fashion to how they have in the past several generations publishers can simply not afford to have gamers who say "I didn't buy that game because it wasn't released to a platform I own"
Regardless of how powerful some people think the Wii U is, the Wii U will certainly has the power to be part of this strategy. The challenge for Nintendo will no longer be to get publishers to release their desired games to Nintendo's system, the challenge will become for Nintendo to convince developers to use its unique features in a way that people will see the Wii U's version of most games as (roughly) equal to or better than their competition's version.
