I wouldn't be surprised if the system's appearance changes drastically before release ...
It is likely that the hardware hasn't been finalized, and may not be manufactured using the desired manufacturing process, and this case is just a placeholder until they're closer to being done. This wouldn't be unusual being that the Wii was demoed in Gamecube cases, and the XBox and XBox 360 were initially demoed in PC towers.
