How about having it pop out of the side when you mouse to the edge (as an option in our profile settings)
It would also be cool to have options for a couple of other peoples suggestions too:
1. Turn it off or on (not sure why people would want to turn it off, but each to their own)
2. Variable movement options: (a) stay still at the top of the page, (b) stay still in the browser window [would be my choice], (c*) current sliding movement, (d) pop-out option as mentioned above.....maybe the left 5-10 pixels, or whatever would allow it's use on a 1024px screen which is the lowest resolution that any significant number of people will be using.
