To the contrary, it was expected that the 3DS would outperform the DS in its first year despite its higher price, because the DS's first year was pretty weak. Unlike the DS, the 3DS has an established brandname, no direct competition and better third party support.

I know, that was what I and about everyone expected. But just looking at the chart of the reasons why people in Japan is not buying a 3DS shows that price, PSP, DS, smartphones and lack of games are primary reasons. Even Nintendo expected bigger numbers, but the reality is that price means a lot and that, in this case, the brand worked against sales, people think 3DS is a DS with 3D and Nintendo's marketing doesn't work to show the truth...
