This isn't backwards compatibility. It's the ability to download old games.


Yes it is backwards compatibility (though it also is ability to download old games).  It plays exact same old software through and emulator and accepts media (granted, not all media) in which the old games were made.  No updates to the software or purchase of new software needed unless you bought on UMD.

It's a harsh reality of having two different methods of distribution for the PSP (and 360 and PS3).  It's much easier to have BC through emulation only instead of emulation and ability to read older media.  In general, expect this behavior in the future.  

Considering the fact that all of my games are downloaded for reasons just like this (that and I don't resell my games usually), it's fine for me.
