It's not just towns, exploration in general. I personally don't enjoy beating the same linear path for 20-30 hours before I can do anything outside the main story. That's how games become repetitive and boring. There needs to be an option to take a break from the main story. I strongly doubt that such a large voice on the internet are sharing their disappointment/dislike/even hatred towards the game just to troll. If anything, it's a sign of just how disappointing the game is.

I hate repetitive games, and while the repetitiveness of Final Fantasy XIII did bother me, it didn't bother me enough, I was concentrating far too hard on the story and the battles to even care, the game worked really well in short bursts and it kept me coming back for more.

When I played through Zelda I didn't touch any of the mini games, I'm not that kind of person, I don't like distractions. In the end, it's all about preference, some people can't stand linearity, others can't stand change, because FFXIII tried something new, I LOVED the fresh experience and it makes it a very memorable game. Lack of change is what is beginning to piss me off about gaming, developers just recycle the old formula and are too scared to change anything.

Square Enix were brave in what they did in FFXIII, they completely changed it, made it like no other game. The game wasn't perfect and it let some people down, especially hardcore FF fans, this was expected though, just like FFXII.

And I have seen plenty of people lie, they feel the game doesn't get enough hate so they start pulling things out their ass such as "the battle system is terrible" "the soundtrack is terrible", this could be down to their backwards opinion, but I highly doubt it, they just want to spread more hate.

And there are far too many people that intentionally go into an FFXIII thread (not so much on VGChartz) just to say "THIS GAME IS SHIT". You do this a lot, but you do it lightheartedly, so I find it more amusing rather than irritating.

And only those people found the game dissapointing, hell even I found the game dissapointing, but it's still one of my favourite games this gen. A lot of people enjoyed the game, it seems people's opinion of this game are at opposite ends of the scale.

With so much hate the game gets, Final Fantasy XIII manage to keep a metacritic score of 83 from both professional reviews and user reviewers, I thought it would be much lower to be honest.

So you admit that the game is repetitive and that you only liked it because of the story? Well that's actually an exceptional explanation as I've played and like many games purely because of the story. However, don't try to convince me that it's one of the best FFs out there. I respect your opinion that you think it's one of the best, I don't like trying to be convinced a shallow game with one of the weakest control systems is good. And yes, I'm one of those people who absolutely hated the battle system. I've said this countless times before, and I'm not going to go into the detail of why the battle system is rubbish. And like I said in the previous opening statement, lack of open world is not the only reason this game gets so much criticism. No character development, broken story forced and mended into tasteless battles, poor level-up system, are but few other complaints I have with the game.

As you said, it's a personal preferences. I'm honestly disappointed  in the stance you take after saying that you do not like distractions and you find games amusing without them, yet you call people who enjoy them trolls for criticizing the lack of. What you seem to fail to understand is that FF XIII does not deliver in value like previous FFs or other JRPGS for that matter. It's not hardcore FF fans who are only not satisfied with the game, it's people who understand what the value of a decent JRPG is- gamers who know that it takes more than pretty pictures to make a RPG enjoyable. You even admit that it is lacking in the exploration department, and that's your preference. Counter that, there are a good number of gamers who prefer the complete opposite of that.

Brave? I think not. SE was trying to appeal to the masses, and although it was successful sales-wise, the quality of the franchise took a huge hit. The least they can do is admit the game is not a JRPG.

I cannot comment after the 3rd paragraph because it just seems like paranoia of not being able to take criticism of a game you like. So to not evoke emotions, I'll stop there.

... oh and the last bit: The game is still the lowest metacritic score of the main franchise (not online FFs). 83 is not a surprise. It's average. Like we've said, people either hate it or love it, so 83 is just about right.

Not just the story. I loved the music, world, art design, presentation, battle system and the pacing as well. Basically EVERYTHING...apart from the linearity.

And I don't call people trolls for having a different opinion, I call them trolls for stalking Final Fantasy XIII threads and pissing everybody off, these people are obsessed with putting this game down.

I'm a huge fan of JRPG's, my favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy VII, I even loved the 2D JRPG's like Chrono Trigger...Yet I still like FFXIII. No need to be so patronising towards people who like FFXIII, most of which ARE hardcore JRPG fans.

And I'm not saying that everybody has to love the game, I acknowledged people like many times in my comments, some people just don't like linearity, don't put words in my mouth.

And yes, the steps Square Enix took with FFXIII were brave. While they did simplify the game, it hardly appeals to the masses, what kind of person would stop playing Halo / COD to play FFXIII? Nobody. The only time Square Enix seemed to be appealing to the masses was when, in interviews, they said they took inspiration from Halo and COD (I did the worlds biggest facepalm after I heard them say that).

Just because the game is linear doesn't mean it isn't a JRPG, if FFXIII isn't a JRPG, then neither is FFX, because I think these games are almost identical.

And I can take criticism hence the reason why I criticised the damn game myself, AND acknowledged others people's criticisms against the game as well. You put words in my mouth and insult me for something I didn't even say?

And why do you disagree with me about the Metacritic scores, and then go on to say the exact same thing I said? People either love the game or hate the game which is the reason why it averaged out at an 83.

It seems you are trying to make an argument out of nothing, in pretty much all of my comments I have REPEATEDLY acknowledged the criticism's against FFXIII yet you completely ignore them and go on to insult or patronise me.

Read my comments more carefully, and stop being such an FFXIII hater, you are already building up a reputation for trolling FFXIII threads.

Again, it's critiscm of the game, I'm sorry you take it too personally when people point out flaws to a game you like (which strangely you are agreeing with a lot of my points but are getting worked up because them). I'd also hardly call it stalking (me or anyone else), I'm usually notified (look at my wall right now) when news of FF hits the forums. And I naturally reply. When a topic is posted people will post their opinion. Whether you can take it or not is another story. I'm not gonna go around accusing every living soul who doesn't like the game a stalker. That's not how I debate. Matter of fact no one should ever use or resort to such a tactic to defend a game they like. It actually further proves my point that the game is not that good because you are arguing by labeling and name-calling.

You starting this argument then ending it on that note is a perfect example. I don't appreciate being called a troll when I'm only arguing. My reputation of disliking XIII is only because I was known as a Soft/Enix fan before I shocked VGC with how disappointed I am with the game.

Also, In response to people saying the scores were amazing, I said the score was not 'that great.' Notice, Although I personally believe XIII is the worst FF, I never used the metacritic score to imply that it's the worst game everzz.  You mistaken-ed it as an assault and blew it out of proportion, even lost the context in which it was presented.And I believe I was the one who mentioned how people either hated it liked it with my first post in this thread, whether you said that before me or not (which I doubt) makes no difference. We agree on that.
