Anyway, if I understand correctly RV770 spans the HD 4830, 4850 and 4870 which is quite a big range in terms of performance.

The 4870 is a quite powerful card even nowadays, not far from twice as powerful as the 4830.

By midrange I meant ~$100-$300 range. Doubling the power of a video card doesn't mean that much really, you wouldn't notice much between two consoles where the only difference was double the shader count.
