Why should they? Every game can be played without knowing the others. There's no connection.

That's not entirely true ... My brother got a bit confused at some of the cutscenes in TP, especially the parts showing Ganondorf with a triforce (why he had it), that stuff was mostly shown in OoT

Though generally, there isn't too much of a connection between Zelda games
