Mostly a taste-in-games thing. Old school Sonic (though Sega was bigger than Nintendo in Europe in Sonic's heyday), but more importantly old-school Nintendo, which was always biggest in the USA.

Just to add a bit of trivia to the history about Sega being bigger in Europe.
Sweden was an exception to that. Thanks to an import company called bergsala AB, we had Game & Watch games since 1981, and almost became the first country after Japan to recieve the NES (Nintnedo delayed that to launch it in the USA first, but we were still the first European country to get the NES)
I don't know how things are today, but Nintendo has been absolutley gigantic in Sweden. Even in my generation, who grew up with GBC and N64, everyone knew what an 8-bit Nintendo and Super Nintnedo was (and this was when we were around 8 years old). The street where the headquarter of Bergsala AB is located was even renamed to Mario's Gata (Mario's street) ^^.

Neat, i always figured Scandinavia was more akin to Eastern Europe in terms of Nintendo penetration (that is to say, next to none at all), and even less acclimated to Nintendo than Western Europe

Scandinavia isn't unanimous between the countries.
In Sweden, there's a slight bias pro home-console Nintendo, and a bias against the X360.
In Norway, however, there's quite a heavy bias against home-console Nintendo. If I recall correctly, through the entire generation so far, both the Ps3 and the X360 have been outselling the Wii.
In Denmark, I believe that the X360 is actually the market leader.
This results in all 3 machines selling pretty much the same as each other in Scandinavia as a whole. To date, the hardware sales are (by VGChartz)
Wii: 1294k
X360: 1221k
Ps3: 1210k
Which means that Scandinavia is, as you thought, overall the Wii's worst territory in Europe.
