Real ocarinas are often plastic. It doesn't ruin the sound. I have a plastic one, it works fine. It's actually pretty fun to play though there is a learning curve. Already knowing how to read sheet music got in the way for me, as the introductory stuff is finger diagrams which I actually found harder to read than notes. I also ended up moving my hands like my old instrument sometimes, which threw everything off.
