Nonlinearity wouldn't work. What you need is Metroid-style linearity, where the next area isn't apparent, but is ultimately inaccessible with your current equipment. More intense combat, weapons with broader usefulness, and bosses more like Monster Hunter, not in terms of length, but in terms of mobility and capability, something like, dare i say, the abominable Rathalos, that has multiple attacks and can really move outside a pattern
