Well, the article quoted here is obviously a mistake. Probably written by an employee somewhere that actually didn't know any better.
HOWEVER! Mario was multi-platform at one time. He appeared on the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, ColecoVision, and ZX Spectrum to name a few. Both in Mario Bros and Donkey Kong.
