gumby, part of the problem with GX was they made it so inaccessible that most people never bothered to really dig that deep. You can definitely tell SEGA made it because rather than ease you into the game gradually they basically just beat you over the head with it until you either quit or master it. So a lot of problems you'll start to notice when you get a real feel for the game, but obviously you can't get a real feel for the game or really even want to if every time you jump on you never feel any real progress.

To give you an idea of how frustrating they made the game, the Story Mode Chapter 7 run was done by some beta tester they just had run the same race over and over again for months as his job. 8 hours of that 1 track a day over and over for MONTHS until he utterly mastered it. His best run is the one you have to beat. Shit like that isn't just adding challenge--it's a dick move.

So given the way they approached the game it's no wonder it sold like shit, and of the people that did buy it, my guess is a very small percentage bothered to master it.  I'm willing to bet not even 50% of the people that bought it even unlocked the Diamond Cup.
