PS2 survived a lot off its few Japanese releases  late in its lifespan.

The Wii is DEAD in Japan in terms of outside software support, period. In 2012, it will not get anymore games over there.

In America, it has lost ground to the PS3, which isbeing promoted more heavily and has consistent software releases every other week. The Wii will go on a 9 month drought without any significant software. Kinect also is the new hot motion device and gets more ads. In EMEAA, PS3 sells in more regions, is advertised more, and again gets MANY more games.

The Wii could have sold more than the PS2 if it shared the same 7-10 year plan. The Wii actually had a 4-year plan, andthe software release schedule reflects that of a 50-month console. Once a successor is imminent, Nintendo drops support abruptly.
