Wow... you didn't even bother to come up with a remotely analgous situation.
Say you like to make your money by digging through the trash and blackmailing people or stealing their identity.
Who you pick is really very random, sometimes richer people, sometimes poorer, and whether or not you score is based on if they shred their mail with identificiation.
Lets say it's a well known fact that these people tend to believe in little league. (Like how most hackers likely know more about technology and therefore are pro-modding.)
You Bud Selig knowing full well you don't shred your paper, and that people like that are big trouble thing "Hey I'm going to start a big lawsuit vs a little league league in a poor neighberhood because one of their teams are the mariniers!"
Yeah... i'd say you should TOTALLY see that coming. Since you are basically picking your targets at random before then... why wouldn't you start with people you don't like first.
You don't think liberal hackers target consvertive buisnesses first and conservative hackers target your liberal companies first?
Common sense.
I mean... why else does basically EVERY other technology company try to at least accomadate hackers a little?
You don't see Nintendo or Microsoft sueing the people who hacked the Wii or 360.
