It was the most expensive component in the system at launch according to this breakdown. Even if the same component costs $10 today it is still a considerable addition to the cost of hardware, not to mention the effort that would have to go into designing the new console around the inclusion of an otherwise unnecessary physical drive, in terms of size, power requirements and other issues. That's a lot of effort for a secondary feature of a system.

But again, this whole debate seems rather pointless to me since they will be sticking with discs in all likelihood anyway.

1. Most expensive on an inexpensive system doesn't mean much, and that's launch costs.

2. It's not moot just because you think it is. They actually have to do it, not you thinking they would.

Fair enough. I've explained my side of the argument, though. What is your reasoning to believe they would go with flash and have a built-in optical drive for b/c?

Other than, because it's cool. 'Cause I agree with you that it is insanely cool but it just seems too much like wishful thinking to me. If you don't think Nintendo would go for a hard-drive then to me this makes even less sense.

edit: btw if you're interested I'd be willing to wager a bet, for fun. Loser treats winner to 800 points at the Nintendo shop, or something. We should know enough details by the end of E3.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
