To attack I am pretty sure you double tap the R trigger button on the top right of N64 controller for the side swipe. To do a spin you hold down the R trigger and hit the back button (Z). Using a classic controller might be easier than the N64 controller. I never had difficulties with N64 controller but I do have pretty big hands.
