It definately makes sense for them to use Blu Ray. It's probably the cheapest way to get dense, higher speed media without resorting to flash.

What if they do resort to it?
Flash would be awesome but they'd forgo b/c
Not unless they have a legacy drive. Heck, they could even keep the controller and memory card GC slots, as they wouldn't add much to the system (and have their own uses).
adding something as expensive as an optical drive for the sole purpose of b/c makes little sense from a hardware manufacturing point of view... maybe if they sold it separately as an attachment, maybe... but I'm not holding my breath for flash just yet, as much as I'd love to see it happen.

This is the optical drive on the Wii. That wasn't that expensive even at launch.
It was the most expensive component in the system at launch according to this breakdown. Even if the same component costs $10 today it is still a considerable addition to the cost of hardware, not to mention the effort that would have to go into designing the new console around the inclusion of an otherwise unnecessary physical drive, in terms of size, power requirements and other issues. That's a lot of effort for a secondary feature of a system.
But again, this whole debate seems rather pointless to me since they will be sticking with discs in all likelihood anyway.
Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
