Get the (N64) F-Zero X and (GCN) F-Zero GX at the least.  GX is very hard but has a ton of extras like building your own craft etc..  I enjoyed F-Zero X a lot back during N64 days.  Time might not have been the best but as long as you have an open mind and not complete graphics whore you will enjoy F-Zero X a lot even today.  F-Zero X was built for speed and it still has plenty of that.  You can get GX from Amazon for about 5-6 dollars.  That is a steal if you ask me.  Picking that up used from Amazon and d/ling the VC F-Zero X would cost you about 15-16 dollars for two great games.

I'm a big fan of GX but it is extremely hard at times (especially the brutal campaign mode :-O ). Would you recommend getting X for some less competitive action? i.e. is it a more 'casual' F-Zero?

F-Zero X can be difficult but it isn't as hard as GX.  It has been awhile since I played F-Zero X but I do remember having difficulty with it a few times (mainly trying to beat the death race record which I got to about a min and half or so, just checked on youtube and someone did it within 37 seconds without cheats which is pretty amazing).  Nothing as nerve racking as GX can be though.  So I guess you can say F-Zero X is a little more 'casual' friendly.
