Shrug, you'll find out when you find out. Amnesia story games:
Baten Kaitos 1/2 - You (Yes, you're a charecter in the game) are slowly recovering memories and finding out what's going on.
FF6 - Terra doesn't remember anything.
FF7 - Cloud can't remember anything, his friends are apparently afraid telling him anything will make him implode or something.
BoF 3 - Young Ryu can't recall shit.
Notes on other games -
Suikoden - Generally that's about war, friendship and loyalty more than memory.
Digital Devil Saga - All about recovering memories, also, eating people. Though it's not a major franchise in any way, shape or form.
