I can gurantee a full blown 2d sonic for consoles wouldnt sell anywhere near the genesis sonics. And i get it you obviosuly dont if you thin a 2d sonic will still sell like it used to. Sonic was on a decline regardless after 2 for the genises sonic 3 didnt sell very well from the sales on vgchartz. and sonic heroes and unleashed sold great. I think sonic heroes did over 5 million outselling all sonics but the second.

You are right, Sonic Heroes indeed sold on the same level as the 16-bit games. So the problem is more that Sega hardly ever makes a good Sonic game than a question of whether it is a 2D or 3D game. And yes, the decline started with Sonic 3. Already back then Sega's problem was to make a great Sonic game. There will be people who disagree, but Sonic 3 wasn't even half the game that Sonic 2 was.

I still think a 2D Sonic (a proper effort) would easily be a multimillion seller even in today's market. It's not going to happen though, because Sega doesn't care. The iPhone basically being the lead platform for Sonic 4 really says it all.

Why no Sonic 3 love? I always thought that game was better than Sonic 2. I mean, there is hardly a difference between the genesis Sonic games, just levels, music and extra little features like swing ropes etc, all of which I thought Sonic 3 was better in and contained more variety. The graphical leap was also pretty big aswell, more noticable than the one from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2.

Angel Island will always be my favourite level aswell, the music is hypnotising and the graphics were stunning for its day.
