Even if a game doesn't suck, if it gets a hype squad behind it, who decides to shill the game to promote their platform of choice, the game is going to not come off well, if it isn't all that... and a bag of chips.  The moment mediocre scores start rolling in on Metacritic, the hype squad gets embarrassed and backs off.  Even if a game IS real good (say Killzone 2), if it doesn't do blockbuster sales numbers, the hype squad will back off, and the game get a very bad rap.

If the original Conduit got hyped by some as "ushering in a new era in FPS" in ANY context, it was doomed to not meet the expectations, and would go down as a title that disappointed, if not flopped.
