Because it came after the highest selling console of all time and because Sony has excellent logistics especially in 2nd/3rd world markets where Microsoft/Nintendo barely have the same presence. You have to remember that the PS2 has sold 36 million since the PS3 was out in addition to another 120 million before the release of the PS3.

This. PS2 was marketed and sold in more markets. People will tend to buy products they are familiar with, and Sony was able to get a foot hold in these markets with the PS2. Very good move by them. Xbox was discontinued, due to problems with Nvidia, so MS was never able to provide a cheap gaming console in these emerging markets.

Maybe.
But remember Xbox 360 and Wii were launched almost two years before PS2 here in Brazil... PS3 was launched six months after PS2.
Sony was the last to arrive here and officially sold more.

What are the numbers in Brazil? I do not know them, but I'm pretty sure cost had a lot to do with it. I know the console prices are pretty high in comparsion to most countries, and that the PS2 was priced a lot cheaper than the 360.
