Once Kaz Hirai took over, Sony made a plan and stuck to it. While MS was busy trying to create hype by securing 3rd party timed exclusives / DLC, Sony was busy making their 1st party - which was a better long term plan. Now, it has shown results, even if people were mocking the idea back then.
Also, Sony does the best job of releasing new games late in the lifecycle. Nintendo usually starts working on their next console and lets the current console die off. This generation, MS decided to drastically change to go casual with Kinect. With the PS2, Sony continued to release new stuff into the PS3's life cycle a couple years.
Also, Sony has the most diverse portfolio of games.
