I dont think it has anything to do with investment, with the existence of used games places like Gamestop and Ebay. The value of a console is only now based on its exclusive offerings and online taste  (and a couple more things as well )as to whether a 360 or PS3 is better. An investment can be sold for another investment. Some might call it squandering and some will call it profiting in terms of quality. Really it depends on the person and opinion is opinion, but stores like Gamestops libraries of used titles and consoles (especially in the PS2 and 360 library) prove how aggressive the trade in trend is still going today.
