again iirc end of 2007 was when it was 'official' in the media but the slide/signs started way early in the year

here is an example

http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article294.html

but yeah it was already going downhill way before the recession

Signs don't really mean anything.

It was "official" in December 2008.

It started in December 2007.

It didn't really effect most people, and most people weren't even aware of it till mid to late 2008.  Therefore to suggest it effected consumer choices earlier is silly.

If anything there is usually a lag when it comes to this stuff, as it takes  while for reality to hit in, as people have the "Well it won't effect me!" menatlity.

signs as in problems have already started by atleast half way through 2007. Those who had trouble cuz of it won't give a rats ass about when it became 'official'. Being official means media will go on about it non-stop and even those who are not affected (at least directly) will start panicing and become aware of it. And again you are talking about recession while I'm talking about economic troubles in the US. And trust me it was going downhill for sure. So I disagree, a recession doesn't happen over night, troubles have already started way before that and people WERE affected. Look up articles around early-mid 2007 if you like and you will see what I mean. Either way this is not the point of the thread and we are kinda derailing it.
