I think Nintendo launched it way too early, just so they could fit it in the FY and not make things look worse than they were. Games simply aren't ready for the system yet... Should have launched the system towards the end of the Year.

I think that Nintendo rushed the 3DS in order to be ready to announce the Wii's successor at this E3 so it could have all the conference to itself. Either ways we are seeing the consequences on the lack of SW right now.

Does E3 really matter in the grand scheme of things? sure it helps build hype but it only gets you so far. 3DS was what had all the buzz at E3 last year and now here we are. What do you think?

I'd say it does now, more than ever, since the West is the main money income for Nintendo, and even Iwata admitted to having to expand this gen or else they will go through the same. E3 is the biggest place with the most media coverage any Videogame company has to show off their creations. Nintendo couldn't let this one slip, I think it was now or never really.

But isn't their main audience the casuals this gen? I mean how many people even follow E3 or even know what it is

but I agree on the Western market aspect. I also believe contrary to what many say that NGP plus ps suit will be a bigger threat to Ninty than the gen of ds/psp.
