4K is the next standard but that is a long ways away.   Bandwidth, media formats, cables, software and so much more would have to be designed and built to accommodate the new resolution and it had taken years and billions of dollars just to enable the 1080p and even that's not adopted completely by the masses yet.

Like I said before, if the GPU is based on the AMD R700 GPU, then 1080p is a given.

They already designed more layed bluray discs. And HDMI 1.4 which supports 4K. The only limitation that's left is tv stations and TV costs. Once the TV's that people start breaking (TV's don't last 20 years anymore) 1080p will be adopted easier.
