Sounds a lot like Paper Mario/Super Mario RPG (that is a good thing). I am not a fan of Bioware or Sonic, but I will give this one a chance. Sega not playing a big role in this may make it a great Sonic game. A new approach can revitalize a struggling franchise.
The only problem I have are all these Sonic characters. Robotnik (Eggman is your mama). Sonic and Tales are great, Knuckles is ok, the others are meh. They give me some sort of Waluigi, Dry Bones feeling.
