Hype drives a lot of games...and movies....and any other form of entertainment. That's why phenomenal movies like The Shawshank Redemption are box office flops in spite of being one of the best movies of all time (depending on who you talk to) and games like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus sell very little compared to every cookie cutter FPS out there.
A lot of games get good reviews because they're pretty, even games that are hardly functional will sell a million copies becuase the graphics are wonderful. It's all about marketing. I've long since come to terms with this.
